Chapter 15

They stopped at Cam’s apartment long enough for Cam to grab blankets and pillows to enjoy the chilly October night. She also grabbed her military issued flashlight with a red filter for safer walking and stuffed them in a large backpack.

They arrived at Reservoir Ridge Natural Area which appeared to be deserted. Cam put the pack on her back and handed Laura a flashlight. “No injuries this time.” Laura slapped Cam’s arm before looping her arm through. “What’s in the backpack?”

“You’ll see.”

They walked quietly to the beach where Cam found a reasonably flat area devoid of large rocks. She doubled the blanket for more comfort and placed the pillows while Laura observed. She motioned for Laura to lie down, leaving her hand out for support. Then placed a second blanket over her before lying down herself, facing Laura expectantly.

“Comfortable?”

“I have to give you credit. This is not what I expected. It’s better.” She reached for Cam’s hand and brought it to her lips.

Cam shifted onto her back and opened her arm, inviting Laura in. She felt her body flush with heat as Laura cuddled close. Cam smelled her shampoo as she kissed the top of her head. Why is that smell so relaxing? She decided she didn’t care, though she was sure it was more than just the shampoo. Lying there, cuddled together under the stars, might just be the highlight of her year so far.

She felt Laura shift her gaze to the sky so Cam did the same. More stars became visible as her eyes adjusted to the darkness. Soon the Milky Way dominated the sky and Cam relaxed into a sense of awe at the scope of the universe and her current situation. In six weeks she had gone from entering into an unknown adventure to laying with an amazing woman in her arms. She gave her a squeeze and felt Laura lean into her more.

They watched the sky in silence for a while before Cam pointed out a satellite making its way across the sky.

“Have you been studying the constellations since our last time out here?” Laura asked.

“Strangely enough, I have yet to learn constellations in astronomy class. I’ve been so busy with rehearsals I completely forgot to look them up on my own. Impressing you on a future date must have slipped my mind.”

Laura turned to look at her. “You already impress me. I hope you know that.”

Unsure how to respond, Cam simply kissed her on the forehead.

Her attention pulled away from the sky, Cam’s thoughts wandered. “What should we tell Kai tomorrow?”

“The truth.” Laura’s voice was strong with conviction.

“Yes, but how much of the truth?”

Laura shifted even closer. “We kissed. We are now dating. And we will keep our kisses private.” Cam felt lips below her ear, causing her body to shudder. “Like now.”

Cam felt her breath catch, her restraint already strained. Another kiss, this time at her jaw. She hummed and tilted her head, just enough to allow access to her neck. Laura took the hint, placing a kiss on Cam’s throat.
